FRANKLIN FILM FESTIVAL IMPORTANT DUE DATES 400 word (minimum) synopsis. At this point, you should have a developed story idea to present for our film festival. Write a synopsis of your story using a minimum of 400 words. This is due TUESDAY 4/23/19
If you are working with a group, please make sure to coordinate accordingly.
This can be typed or handwritten.
Guidelines: Who? What? When? Where? Why? A synopsis is an outline of the plot of a book, play, movie, or episode of a television show. In our case we are creating a 3-5 minute short film. Tell me the story! That's all. This will be considered a draft, so don't stress! Just tell the story. You can tweak it later if necessary! (When writing, think of feasibility. Will you be able to create this film adequately in only a 2 week span of time. So think of your locations, group setup, materials, etc. You can still tell a compelling story without all the frills.)
It is imperative that it is turned in to ensure that we can begin storyboarding and filming ASAP.
Quiz Friday 4/12/19: Film Editing Techniques
Review information from class powerpoint that is attached here. Review the video on Film Continuity below and be able to explain the 180 degree rule thoroughly (in your own words).
How do you make a short movie or video that people will want to watch? You need to:
Get the right equipment (Start on the right foot)
Learn about film language (what is being communicated visually?)
Get ideas from other filmmakers (don't copy stories, but learn about lighting and color, and continuity and movement)
Build your skills (practice, practice practice)
Be organized (follow a system: preproduction, production, post production)
Get feedback (get feedback in the editing process and share what you are creating)
2. Cameras- Today's smartphone cameras are viable options in creating quality film productions, and are generally easy to use and access. You may opt to use another camera as there are several types that may fit what you need. Some examples are
camcorder
SLR
mirrorless camera
compact camera
the list goes on!
Note: We will be learning more about how our commonly found cell phone and tablet cameras can be used to produce quality and cinematic footage in preparation for our cell phone film festival.
3. Green- Screening-Sometimes you may need to create a virtual set, or place your objects and actors elsewhere in a scene. Chromakey, if done with the proper lighting can be a great asset to a production. The better the lighting, the higher quality the key and the better chance you have a of making it look more realistic. The two main colors used for chroma-key are green and blue because they are the furthest from human skin tone.
4. More Materials: There is probably an infinite list of items you could use in film production, however when beginning, you will find that you can produce great quality with a limited budget by focusing on the essentials. Some other items you might need are:
tripod (to stabilize your footage)
proper lighting (to illuminate subject, also varying shadows create mood and intensity and emotion)
microphone and recording device (many devices have them built in, but you may want to enhance quality and eliminate background noise)
the list goes on!
5. Non-Linear Editing is:Non-destructive editing is a form of audio, video, or image editing in which the original content is not modified in the course of editing; instead the edits are specified and modified by specialized software. Some well known examples of non linear editing software:
imovie (Mac OS)
final cut pro (Mac and PC)
Kinemaster (Android and IOS)
Adobe Premiere (Mac and PC)
(This is as opposed to linear editing (traditional, and still sometimes used) which is DESTRUCTIVE AND REQUIRES YOU TO LITERALLY CUT AND SPLICE PHYSICAL FILM STRIPS FROM REEL TO REEL) 6. Film Language: The way pictures, sound and editing help to tell the story. Visual language allows us to record ideas in a way that is more universal than spoken words. You can learn a lot by watching films and taking note of how they are constructed (lighting ,sound, editing techniques, camera placement, etc.)
